10 Best UK Albums Of 2019
7. Dave - PSYCHODRAMA
It’s hard to think that Dave is still only 21 given his maturity and his immense rise to fame over a relatively short space of time. A few years ago he had been slowly carving out an underground career for himself and then in late 2016 he got his commercial break. Drake hopped on the remix for his Wanna Know track and his started gaining popular recognition. After this moment, he has never looked back. And this is not to say the Drake co-sign was the reason for his success. It’s down to his immense talent.
PSYCHODRAMA is a series of extremely vivid stories about Dave’s struggles with mental health and his upbringing in inner city London. Everything he writes on the album is straight from the heart with the maturity and wit you’d expect from a rapper at least 10 years his senior.
There are so many standout lyrics to pick out from this album. “My bros are blacksmiths like Jaden and Willow” from the opening track is a definite highlight. Part of the reason some of the funniest and smartest bars work so well is because he juxtaposes them with raw unfiltered emotion as well. The closing song Drama is a bittersweet moment as he describes the effects of his brother’s incarceration.
Lesley is a lengthy, vivid, violent but all too real story about domestic abuse and Dave manages to handle such a sensitive subject so perfectly.
If PSYCHODRAMA is anything to go by, Dave is destined for a lengthy and successful career in hip-hop.
