10 Best UK Albums Of 2019
4. Little Simz - GREY Area
With her third album Little Simz has perfected her sound. It’s that simple. Grey Area is one of 2019’s most precisely crafted albums, both in terms of songwriting and instrumentation. With the help of Inflo, Grey Area finds its identity by combining the sounds of soul, jazz, rnb and of course hip-hop.
Little Simz explores her eponymous Grey Area all over the album, being fully aware of her faults and confidence at the same time. Songs like Boss and Venom are brutally raw examples of pure feminine power. Songs like Selfish on the other hand have Little Simz looking inward and critiquing the way she navigates her life. This isn’t done to the point of pure self destruction but simply unashamed honesty. And that’s what ties everything on this album together. Honesty.
It only runs for a mere 35 minutes, and that’s because there is not a single moment of filler across the entire album. It shows just how fine tuned and distilled everything about Grey Area truly is.
If Little Simz continues working at this level of expertise, it won’t be long before she’s gains the widespread popular recognition the quality of her work warrants.
