10 Best UK Albums Of 2019

5. Thom Yorke - ANIMA

Thom Yorke has nothing to prove to anyone at this point in his career. His work with Radiohead has produced some of the very best albums of our generation. It’s no surprise that his solo work is also stunning, and ANIMA may just be his very best solo album thus far.

Coupled with a short 15 minute interpretative dance film, Anima is a claustrophobic, textured but ultimately beautiful mesh of electronic music and art pop.

Thom Yorke has been honing his skills for electronic music for almost 20 years now, and it shows all over the album with just how fluid and mesmerising the instrumental palette is. Not The News is a song you’re not sure you should dance to or be completely creeped out by, and that dystopian paranoia is a theme that runs throughout the album.

Of course his knack for writing utterly heartbreaking music remains intact. Dawn Chorus is as existential as existential can be, and it’s also up there with one of the most beautiful but soul destroying songs of his career.

Into his 50s now, Thom Yorke is showing now sign of slowing down. In fact it seems he is continuing to challenge himself and his audience, and it’s resulting in some of his best solo work to date.
