10 Best Viking Metal Bands Of All Time

9. King Of Asgard

From the ashes of Swedish power metal outfit Falconer (a.k.a. Mithotyn) there rose King of Asgard in 2008. Taking influence from legendary outfits such as Bathory, the group employ a melodic death metal sound to let rip with lyrics focusing on a pre-Christian Europe, Norse myths and their ancestral heritage. Their debut demo, Prince of Märings hit the stands in January 2009, quickly grabbing the attention of listeners and labels alike thanks to its aggressive mix of Norse culture and death metal rage.

The group use tremolo-picked guitars for grand-scale riffs that serve their approach to groove and melody perfectly. Frontman Karl Beckman's raspy vocals are frequently contrasted with old school Viking-style chants providing an intriguing duality between the group's contemporary metal sound and ancient historical lyrical matter.

Signing with Metal Blade Records in December 2009, King of Asgard unleashed 3 studio albums with Metal Blade and 1 more with Swedish label Trollmusic. Regardless of the label, King of Asgard consistently deliver the battle-hardy goods with epic lyrical tales of bloodshed and conquest against an extreme metal backdrop.
