10 Biggest Mistakes In Rock Music History
7. Roxanne - The Police
The Police were basically a world of contradictions when they first came onto the scene. Even though they got lumped into the new wave category, there was a lot more complexity and borderline punk energy from this power trio than you would find out of bands like Devo or the Clash. They might have been able to play circles around their colleagues, but they weren't nearly as careful in the studio.
When you listen to Roxanne nowadays, a lot of people remember the cheeky laugh that Sting makes at the beginning of the song. If you wanted to be the analyzing music critic, it may be Sting playfully mocking Roxanne for insisting on being a part of the red light district for most of her life. In reality, it was basically just Sting's ass being in the wrong place at the right time.
As the band listened back to the song on the overheads, Sting decided to sit down and accidentally sat on the piano that was right next to him, causing him to laugh. Since they were still on the studio floor though, the overheads picked up a bit of his laughter while the microphones were still recording. So along with getting credit as an amazing vocalist and bassist, Sting got the most important credit to his name on this track: Butt Piano.
