10 Biggest Rock Songs From Every Year Of The 1980s
7. 1983: Every Breath You Take - The Police
The Police - the British band fronted by Sting, not the law enforcement agency - decided to call it quits in 1983, but not before putting out one last album full of bangers.
Synchronicity gave Police fans several great tracks to remember them by, including King of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger, and a little ditty called Every Breath You Take.
This ode to stalking overcame its dodgy subject matter to rocket to the top of the rock music ladder. Copies flew off the shelves in every market; in the UK, it finished the year as the 16th best-selling song of all, whilst in America, it ended 1983 at the top of that list.
Every Breath You Take is the 31st best-selling song in Billboard history, which is absolutely insane when you think about the sheer volume of quality songs that chart has seen since its inception.
The gall of The Police to quit after releasing something so titanic is off the scale and is the ultimate example of the phrase “always leave them wanting more”.
