10 Biggest Sell Out Albums In Hard Rock Music History
1. Just Push Play - Aerosmith
Towards the start of the ‘90s, it looked like there was nothing that was going to stop Aerosmith. No matter how many times they are brought down by drug addiction, changing times, or just their own internal dysfunction, they soldiered their way through the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s remaining one of the most relevant rock bands in the mainstream. A funny thing started happening once they tasted their first #1 hit.
In the wake of the song I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing becoming the biggest success of their career, the next few albums would be an attempt to capitalize on that one song, which culminated in the weird turn towards pop on Just Push Play. As much as Aerosmith may have moved away from the traditional sounds of blues and rock in recent years, you could always call them a rock band at the end of the day. The same cannot be said for the songs on here though, with Jaded being one of the most candified Aerosmith songs ever committed to tape.
Though there are definitely some bright spots like the exotic sounds of Beyond Beautiful, you also have songs that feel like they’re either messing around in the studio or they’re trying to soundtrack a movie that doesn’t even exist yet. By the end of the cycle, most of the band had even washed their hands of this thing as well, with Steven Tyler being the only one appearing in the video for the bonus track Girls of Summer. This might not have been that far away from Love in an Elevator, but after this album we were never going to get a song like Back in the Saddle ever again.
