4. Have a Nice Day - Bon Jovi
For a band of Bon Jovi’s stature, you’re always tempting fate when you decide to cross genres late in your career. By this point, you have a legacy to think about, and it’s not going to be nearly as secure if you have some spotty parts of your catalog in the rearview. You shouldn’t mess with the formula too much, but Jon Bon Jovi was always more than just your average rock singer.
Collaborating with everyone from Desmond Child to fresh faces on the scene, Have a Nice Day feels like both worlds of Bon Jovi’s sound colliding, taking the more melodramatic side of what he did back in the ‘80s and also weaving in some more mainstream style songwriters into the mix. Since he’s still talking about the small town values that he was raised on back in the day, this is almost Bon Jovi’s attempt at going heartland rock, and it works to some degree, as Jon tries on his best impression of Bruce Springsteen on some of these songs.
This is still a Bon Jovi album though, and something like the title track works perfectly when playing off of the hookiness behind Who Says You Can’t Go Home, which was so infectious that it actually roped in a bit of a country audience along the way. Jon had come a long way since the days of Slippery When Wet, but underneath all of that gruff exterior was still that young kid from Jersey looking to write one more killer song.
