3. Educated Horses - Rob Zombie

Towards the mid ‘00s, Rob Zombie could have easily just rested on his laurels if he wanted to. Going through the past few years with White Zombie and then into his solo career, he had already crafted an aesthetic that no one else could touch, with songs that felt like you landed in the greatest metal dance club that you would ever see on this plane of existence. You can only make that music for so long though, and Rob thought it was about time to get weird on Educated Horses.

Rob wasn’t exactly shy about the shift in direction either, with Foxy Foxy serving as the lead into this new version of what he had to offer. In lieu of the usual boogie man persona that he had, this is Rob flirting with a few more dance elements this time around, almost trying to act seductive in his own weird little way.

In case you haven’t noticed though, this is ROB FREAKIN ZOMBIE. This is a man that directed an update of Halloween, so to hear him go for something a little more subtle and seductive just feels wrong. Compared to his usual output, hearing him whisper on half of these tunes feels like he’s kneecapping himself half of the time, knowing that he can tear our heads off at any given second but just decides not to for some reason. To borrow from Rob’s favorite movie genre, this is the kind of slasher movie where you see the killer lure in his prey and then you never get to see him do any real damage.
