10 Biggest-Selling Rock Music Albums Of All Time
7. Appetite For Destruction - Guns N Roses
Is it really fair to consider Guns N Roses a glam rock band anymore? Sure, they may have come out at a time when acts like Poison and Warrant were still storming the charts, but the cowboy boots and grimy hair wasn't something you'd find Bret Michaels doing any time soon. Compared to the poodle haired counterparts on the Sunset Strip, this was a return to the heart of rock and roll.
Coming from the classic school of rock, most of Appetite for Destruction resonated with any stripe of rock fan. Feeling like a more road worn version of an act like the Rolling Stones, the guitar licks from Slash were completely new for the time, bringing it back to the blues when everyone was trying to be the next Eddie Van Halen. Combine that with the punk rock intensity of Axl Rose and the album pretty much sold itself, off the back of amazing singles like Sweet Child O Mine or Welcome to the Jungle.
Since there are 18 million copies of this thing in people's homes, even the lowlights and album cuts tend to get some airplay every now and again, like the amazing closer Rocket Queen or the ode to excess on My Michelle. Though it may have come out in '87, Appetite for Destruction was proof enough that the sound of '80s glitter rock was long gone.
