10 Biggest 'Sellout' Albums In Rock
7. Only By The Night - Kings Of Leon (2008)
This was the turning point for Kings Of Leon. Once the moustachioed darlings of garage rock, this was the moment they became the pinup poster boys of arena rock. Set the two lead singles aside for a moment; this album is booked ended by two incredibly sincere numbers. Closer, was a haunting take on post-punk, with weeping guitars and poetically evocative lyrics. Cold Desert was equally as emotional, with Caleb Followill giving a soul bearing performance, as he exposed his struggles with alcohol and religion.
But the rest of the album was tasteless filler, devoid of all substance. It seems fate had a hand in writing, both Sex On Fire and Use Somebody. Calleb Followill was recovering from a dislocated shoulder. Deprived of a range in motion, the only part of his guitar he could reach was the bottom of the neck. This led him to write the two irritatingly catchy hooks to both tracks.
The lyrics were filled with derivative and uninspired musings about romance. Use Somebody was perhaps the most offensive. The second single reeked of over production, with swirling synth sounds, and surging pop choruses. This came from a group who had once written the song Soft: a number that humorously detailed Caleb's inability to get it up, while inebriated.
