10 Biggest 'Sellout' Albums In Rock
6. Hands All Over - Maroon 5 (2010)
Maroon 5 were never a particularly hip underground band. They weren't pioneers of a new exciting sound and they didn't strive for anything all that ground breaking. But, their first album was an engaging take on alt-rock, fused with funky pop. It was an album that hinted at depth even if it wasn't fully realised. There was a campness that screamed Scissor Sisters meets Elton John, and it was great.
Their second album presented two choices for the band. They could go down the rock route, exploring the edgier sound that had garnered them critical praise. Or they could double down on the radio-savvy pop. They chose the latter. By the third album they were firmly established as a pop group. They relied on their charismatic frontman, who was more keen on flaunting his tattoos and chiseled abs, than anything else.
Hands All Over contained a track that to this day still haunts radio stations and dance playlists. Moves Like Jagger was not worthy of bearing the name of one of rock's pioneering frontman. The song, and the album it resides on, sealed Maroon 5's fate as a group lacking in artistic integrity.
