6. Clash of the Titans Tour
Thrash metal as a genre has always been on the fringes of other metal acts. Fitting somewhere between the sounds of punk and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, you usually saw acts like this as support acts for the more seasoned music veterans like Judas Priest or Black Sabbath. On the Clash of the Titans tour though, we got to see the heavyhitters together for the first time.
This was practically a bill to die for from the word go, with Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer are sharing the same bill at once. While not exactly sounding the same, each of them tended to offer something awesome to the metallic stew, from Slayer's balls-to-the-wall tempo shifts to the technical mastery of Megadeth, who were just coming off of their Rust in Peace era.
Though the bill may have already been stacked, another support act known as Alice in Chains were at the bottom of the bill, whose alternative spin on metal tended to be a turnoff for those who wanted the heavier side of things. This would end up being oddly prophetic though when AOC's album Facelift promptly exploded months later off of the strength of Man in the Box. Despite having the capacity to deliver 8 different layers of shred at once, this was only the beginning. Something even more heavy was on the horizon.
