10 Biggest Unsolved Mysteries In Rock Music History
7. Death of Elliot Smith
Towards the end of the ‘90s, Elliot Smith seemed to have the entire indie rock scene at his feet. After already notching up some amazing folk tinged rock and roll on his solo records like Either/Or, his contributions to the soundtrack to Good Will Hunting introduced millions more listeners to his emotionally rich acoustic tracks. For a man that had so much going for him, it seemed that he was found dead by his own hand in 2003…or was he?
On the night of Elliott’s death, his girlfriend remembers getting into a fight with him and then cooling off by taking a shower, after which she found Elliott standing in the kitchen with a knife through his chest. Although Elliott had his struggles with depressive feelings every now and again, this occasion was something much different from her perspective.
Despite having what looked like a suicide note at the scene, Elliot didn’t display any form of hesitation marks on his skin either, making it more and more plausible that the wound was intentionally made by someone trying to break in. Though there have been reports saying that his girlfriend heard a bit of a commotion downstairs when she was still in the shower, there is no security footage and no witnesses to confirm any foul play that went on behind the scenes. Outside of a few leads, none of the outcomes are going to bring back one of the greatest budding songwriters of the turn of the century.
