10 Biggest WTF Moments In '90s Rock Music

5. Norwegian Church Burnings

From one protest to another now, only this one involved less arses out and more arson.

The black metal scene in Scandinavia exploded in the early 90s, particularly in Norway where bands like Mayhem and Dakrthrone were considered walking deities by their followers.

We almost gave this spot on the list to the murder of Mayhem guitarist Euronymous by fellow band member Varg Vikernes, as it remains a shocking story even after so many years.

However, as twisted as that is, it only affected one person. What we're talking about here had ramifications across the entire country.

On June 6th 1992, the Fantoft Stave Church in the city of Burgen was burnt to the ground. Whilst he was never found guilty for it, the man suspected of the attack was... Varg Vikernes!

What a surprise...

This incited over 50 similar incidents over the next four years, with all the solved cases involving black metal fans or musicians. The genre's satanist themes clearly inspired people to destroy the places of worship, as almost a proof of dedication to their new religion.

Don't burn down churches, guys, it's really not a nice thing to do.
