10 Bizarre Metal Covers Of Classic Songs
4. Word Up - Korn
Once the '90s got started, the metal community was starting to shift a lot more towards rhythm. Since Metallica were taking things down a notch and Pantera was paving the way for the groove metal bands coming down the pipeline, the drummer was suddenly a lot more important than you thought he was. So it was only a matter of time before you forgot about metal altogether and went into the world of funk.
Even though the idea of a nu metal version of Word Up makes about as much sense as a meat loaf flavored M+M, Korn somehow made this unlikely idea work by leaning into the weirdness of the idea. Given that Jonathan Davis' unique approach to vocals was weird enough on its own, hearing him adopt the weird vocal affectation of the Cameo original actually makes for something a lot more fun and engaging.
Also, you have to remember where Korn was at this point. Up until the late '90s, these were the guys that were touching on some of the darkest subjects imaginable, only to come through with a song that sounds like it could turn any nu metal function into one big party. You didn't really have to beat the hell out of each other on this one. It was time to find your inner funk and just have a good time.
