10 Bizarre Metal Covers Of Classic Songs
5. Gimme Shelter - Stone Sour
Ever since their inception, Stone Sour always tended to fall on the harsher side of rock. Despite all of the original Maggots calling them Slipknot lite for having Corey Taylor in the band, songs like Bother and Through Glass have given them enough staying power to make a name for themselves on their own. After the mammoth album release behind the House of Gold and Bones though, we were treated to one hell of a party when we stopped in Burbank.
Being a part of a fun EP the band was doing on the side, their version of the Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter is one of the greatest stand alone songs they've ever made. Since the original Gimme Shelter was already dark and ominous to begin with, this is the logical conclusion of everything, with Corey Taylor selling Mick Jagger's words about a storm coming better than anyone else on the rock scene.
What really brings it over the top though is bringing in Lzzy Hale as a guest vocalist, who brings just the right amount of drama to the final mix. While the original female vocalist Merry Clayton made one hell of an impression on the original, Hale may have just topped her here, bringing a grit that sounds like what Joan Jett would have done if she had Janis Joplin's vocal range. Whereas the Stones' original may have captured what it was like towards the end of the '60s revolution, this is the rendition of the song that deserves to be played when the rapture eventually comes.
