10 Bizarre Songs Which Prove That The 1950s Were Crazier Than You Think

1. Sonny James – The Cat Came Back

You may recognise this song from animator Cordell Barker's equally crazy (and Oscar-nominated) 1988 cartoon of the same name. Sonny James, the singer-songwriter responsible for this number, was a huge star in the country music scene, scoring more than two-dozen number one hits, including an incredible string of 16 consecutive number one singles.

Known as 'The Southern Gentlemen', in 2007 James was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Despite all of the singer's success, he will no doubt be best remembered by many for this sinister and strange story of a man driven mad by a little yellow cat that simply refuses to go away.

The composition dates back to 1893. The song appears in the soundtrack to Spike Jonze's 2002 comedy film Adaptation, and the 2001 horror thriller 388 Arletta Avenue. A dark acoustic version was even recorded by Macabre Minstrels, a side-project of the death metal band Macabre, on their album, Morbid Campfire Songs.
