10 Bold Predictions For Heavy Metal In 2018

3. System Of A Down Will Go On Hiatus (Again)

We all want that elusive sixth System of a Down album. But, newsflash, it isn’t going to show up anytime soon. In a 2017 Q&A, bassist Shavo Odadjian stated “It’s not happening […] Not right now.” Then, in December that year, Serj Tankian came out with “We’ve discussed it and we’ve played each other songs, but we still haven’t come eye-to-eye on how things should be done for us to be able to move forward with it.”

This comes after the band has been reunited and playing on-and-off tours together for nearly eight years. If it has taken the Armenian-American quartet that long to get to the “still haven’t come eye-to-eye” stage, then we can probably expect their album to finally hit shelves in the year 2195.

Furthermore, things have started to look less than promising on the live front, too. In their review of System of a Down’s headlining slot at Download Festival 2017, Metal Hammer wrote “With hardly any crowd interaction – or even chemistry between members – it feels like they’re playing by numbers, and certainly aren’t enjoying themselves as much as the audience.”

As sad as it is to write and as terrible as it feels to be this critical of a great, great band, it just feels like the System of a Down reunion is beginning to run its natural course. Sorry.

I write for Metal Hammer, Prog and WhatCulture. I don’t have Facebook or Twitter, so you’ll just have to call me a stupid cuck to my face.
