There have been a number of cover versions of Cameo’s Word Up! including one by Mel B (of the Spice Girls) and most recently by the atrocious manufactured girl group Little Mix. Don’t bother with either of those as they’re both awful and should be avoided at all costs. In 1994 though, Scottish rockers Gun unleashed their own recording which turned the eighties funk hit into a thumping hard rock classic.

Gun throw out the slap bass, funk guitars and synths of the original and toughen up that main melody with a crunching, air guitar ready riff whilst disposing of those naff talkbox vocals in favour of a rougher, grungier sound.

Better than the original in practically every way.
