10 Britpop Bangers You Totally Forgot Existed
4. Cud – Rich And Strange (1992)
Less a banger you’d totally forgot existed, more a band you’d totally forgot existed (yes, yes, apart from you, stop showing off.) Leeds-formed Cud are an outfit that are definitely worth a revisit, not least for this opening track on their third – and most successful - studio album, Asquarius.
Embracing the post-shoegaze, burgeoning Britpop years with big guitars, sincere vocal performances and, crucially, a pervasive sense of fun, Cud were arguably cut from the same cloth as The Wonder Stuff, with a smatter of the bracing pop rock of late 80’s Julian Cope.
“Holy Moses, here we go again, headlong into some crazy scheme,” sings Carl Puttnam in his convivially vibrato-laced baritone, sort of like a twinkly Edwyn Collins. Displaying a deft juggle of indie pop, heavy rock, and a touch of funk bassline, this track defines the band who never quite got swept up onto the main stage with the rest of the turns.
STANDOUT LYRIC: From the cellar of my house comes a bellowing / It's the tired and lonely tigers that I've kept there / I can't imagine who the landlord's expecting / They've been in there since June last year.
