10 Britpop Bangers You Totally Forgot Existed

3. The La's – Feelin’ (1991)

The La’s' final single before they disbanded was an oasis (pun intended) of chunky, undulating rhythm guitar in a desert of acid house and dream pop.

The pioneering Liverpool outfit have been eulogised over the years, and with good reason. Their very existence has been credited with influencing some of the most successful indie bands of the decade and beyond. Despite forming in 1983, Lee Mavers and his (myriad, over the years) bandmates didn’t actually begin recording music in earnest until signing with Go! Discs in 1987. Among these recordings was the effervescent brilliance of Feelin’.

Despite being a mere one minute fifty in length, Mavers manages to cram an inordinate amount of spritely, spirited musicality, which lies in glorious juxtaposition with his sometimes despairing vocals. “Oh my Lord, I can’t take no more,” he rasps, his wolfish Scouse growl never sounding better. The central lead guitar solo, a power-chorded descant of the melody, sounds like it was played in despairing anger, despite it beautifully complimenting the jaunty bounce of the rhythm.

Brilliantly paying homage to rockabilly, early Beatles, and even skiffle, whilst managing to stay true to the pure sound curated throughout the album, it's a perfect epitaph to this most magnetic and inscrutable of bands.
