10 Cheesiest Music Videos Of The 80s
7. Lick It Up - KISS
Once MTV hit it big on the air, there was a certain pecking order as to who would fit on the channel and who wouldn't. Considering the theatrics behind some of the bigger names in music of the '70s, it's easier to decipher how an act like David Bowie translated well to the small screen while the Grateful Dead kept on truckin like they always do. If there was anyone who should have made off like bandits in this scenario, it should have been KISS. A funny thing happened on the way to air though.
Looking to revamp their style, KISS used the promotional cycle for Lick it Up to finally take their trademark face paint, leaving the world to see their real forms. As much as the song itself is a fine slice of hard rock, the entire video for Lick It Up is about as by the numbers as they come, owing more to the emergence of hair metal than the ones who started theatrical rock in the first place.
Going even more poodle haired as the decade went on, the entire KISS ship seemed to be malfunctioning, without even giving us one look at Gene Simmons' Demon persona during the golden age of music videos. Then again, sometimes even the most obvious opportunities end up falling by the wayside every now and again.
