10 Cheesiest Music Videos Of The 80s
3. Just a Friend - Biz Markie
Across every era of music, there comes along songs that just aren't designed to be hits. Whether they be strange detours into different genres like Bohemian Rhapsody or the random delve into the bizarre like the Proclaimers' 500 Miles, these songs are not meant to cause a new revival on the charts or anything. If you sell something well enough though, even some of the flagrant failures can turn into hits every now and again.
With every single frame that goes by in Biz Markie's Just a Friend, you just can't help but think that this song isn't even trying to take itself seriously. The rhymes are borderline incompetent, and the whole unlucky lover schtick that the Biz is laying down just comes off as funny, especially when he dons the Mozart get up and half heartedly attempts to mime the piano parts of the original sample.
Granted, this is one of those times where the sheer incompetence goes back into being funny by the end of the track. Given how much he's selling this thing, you can't help but yelp along whenever you hear the Biz give everything he's got into singing "YOU". It's not really going to light the world on fire or anything, but you'd have to be a serious cynic if you said that you hate this from front to back.
