10 Most Cheesy Songs From The 1970s

2. Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes (1979)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrDEJfdEaUE Yes, I like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain I'm not much into health food, I am into champagne I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon, and cut through all this red tape At a bar called O'Malley's, where we'll plan our escape Silly, silly silliness from Rupert Holmes (yeah who the heck is he?) about some d**khead who gets bored with his wife and responds to a 'witty' advert in the personal section of the newspaper that he loves pina colada (bleurgh) and getting caught in the rain. That he's not into yoga, and that he has half a brain (these are the lyrics, I swear). Eventually our lothario decides that he must immediately meet up with his new found soulmate and he finds out it is... drumroll... his own wife. And nobody gets mad! They just laugh about their furtive attempts at adultery and learn that they both like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain. That they're not into yoga, that they have half a brain. A nonsensical piece of cheese that is nonetheless catchy despite the piquancy of its smell, Escape (The Pina Colada Song) didn't do as well in the British charts - charting in the mid twenties - as it did in other countries - especially America where it topped the Billboards and was the last number one of the 1970s. It ushered in a new decade of cheese - the 1980s, which I have to say was good, but didn't hit the brilliance of 1970s cheese.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
