4. Mr. Blobby - Mr. Blobby
http://youtu.be/h37KQu64RY4 Year: 1993 Weeks at No.1: Three The first official novelty act of this list - and boy, what an act. Watching it back, just what on God's green Earth were we thinking in 1993? This incredulous yet catchy song remarkably knocked Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything For Love" off the number one spot at the start of December. Not content on having one week at the top, it returned to #1 on Christmas week by bumping off Take That. Not even a boy band in their peak of popularity could prevent Blobbymania, with 600,000 sales (meaning platinum status). Mr. Blobby was a round pink.. thing covered in yellow spots, that was a regular on Noel's House Party (no, being an associate of Noel Edmonds does not make this Christmas related). With his permanent grin, googly eyes and tendencies for mischief, it's a wonder he was ever allowed near children. But in this day and age, even Rolf Harris would be on the sex offenders register just for singing about Two Little Boys. The video featured plenty of familiar British faces: Jeremy Clarkson, Carol Vorderman, footballer Garth Crooks, rugby player Will Carling and even Noel Edmonds himself. Blobby plodded about the scene with his electronic voice, repeating the word 'Blobby' over and over as he does, while children sang their praises for him. No, you're not going crazy - it really is that odd. There are a couple of discretely placed Christmas trees in the video and chimes in the backing track, but this song isn't a representative of the festive season in a million years. In a 2002 poll by retailer HMV, Mr. Blobby had the unceremonious distinction of being voted the worst Christmas song ever.
