10 Christmas No 1's That Had Nothing To Do With Christmas

8. Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)

http://youtu.be/YR5ApYxkU-U Year: 1979 Weeks at No.1: Five Home to another disturbing video for children everywhere, Another Brick in the Wall was part of Pink Floyd's rock opera album The Wall. Broken into 3 parts across the album, Part 2 (also known by the working title 'Education') is the most globally recognised and the band's biggest mainstream success. The video above became the official music video in 1982 (the content is lifted from the Pink Floyd - The Wall film they made). It comprises of two songs: as well as ABITW Part 2, there was The Happiest Days of Our Lives. You'll notice the lack of the giant animated/puppet teacher that has frightened generations of children which was in the original music video of 1979. But both are pretty grim and disturbing how ever you look at it. The song is regarded as a protest against rigid schooling and strict boarding schools, which bassist and lyricist of the song Roger Walters had endured in his youth. Seen as controversial due to its branding as an anarchistic hymn, it was even banned in South Africa after it was adopted by the supporters of a boycott protesting racial inequities in education. Another Brick In The Wall was a number one virtually everywhere else though; from Switzerland and Sweden to Australia and Austria. Everywhere it seems, except for Italy where it only reached number 2 (I guess they're happy with their education system). Despite their mass appeal and fame, it turned out to be the band's only ever #1.
