10 Christmas Songs That Are Actually Good

6. Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody

What was in the water in 1973, seriously? The third glam rock entry of the list and the track that pipped Wizzard and Elton John to the Christmas No. 1 spot, was actually written in Noddy Holder's mum's house after a night of drinking. Rock and roll.

The source of Holder's pension scheme, the song is a staple of every bad school disco which, looking back, is a bit daunting. "Look to the future now, it's only just begun..." The UK was in the toilet economy-wise and had just stopped striking!

The song was written at a roller coaster time for Noddy and co. While the bulk of the melodies were taken from unused songs written years earlier, the putting together and 'Christmassing' (so to speak) of the track came 10 weeks after drummer Don Powell was in a serious car accident, yet also on the back of Cum on Feel the Noize and "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me. It became the band's best-selling song ever.
