10 Christmas Songs That Are Actually Good
5. Tom Jones & Cerys Matthews - Baby, It's Cold Outside
In my opinion, the second-best thing Catatonia front woman Cerys Matthews ever sang (the way she belts out the words Mulder and Scully should be put in a museum). Matthews teamed with legendary grandma charmer and fellow Welshie Tom Jones to produce arguably the most well-known adaptation of this Frank Loesser classic, released for Christmas 1999.
The song is a call and response duet whereby one singer (usually a man) tries to convince another singer (usually a woman) that's it's far too cold outside and she should stay and have a lovely, romantic evening together. Or, as the youths of today would call it, "Netflix and Chill". It also came at a time of prosperity for both stars as Jones was in the midst of a career rejuvenation with the release of Reload featuring Mama Told Me Not to Come and Sex Bomb and Matthews, as part of Catatonia, was riding high following their sophomoric album International Velvet which had their biggest hits Mulder and Scully and Road Rage.
Speaking of the youths of today, the song has been given a bit of grief in recent years owing to the slightly non-consenting vibes about it. The line "what's in this drink?" is also a bit creepy. Good song, though.
