10 Classic Albums That Are Criminally Short
8. Lady Soul - Aretha Franklin
Even with the rock and roll revolution being firmly underway in the '60s, there was still room for the more soulful sides of music on the charts. After all, this was also the same decade that gave us some of the best music Motown had ever spat out, leaving the rest of the market beyond Hitsville with a fairly high bar to clear. When you have a powerhouse like Aretha Franklin leading the charge though, you don't have to worry about a damn thing.
Across every single second of Lady Soul, Franklin comes as close to perfection as soul music gets, as she lays it all out on songs like Chain of Fools and People Get Ready. Though she may not have written every one of these songs, each of these tracks feels as lived-in as possible, as if she's telling these stories after experiencing them firsthand.
Aside from the more pointed material, the heartfelt moments are also a sight to behold, with You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman being one of the prettiest sounding love songs that the decade ever made. Although this only clocks in at a lean 28 minutes, it never overstays its welcome or has any opportunity to drag. As far as Aretha is concerned, you don't really need much more than this if you're looking to blow minds.
