10 Classic Albums That Artists Hated Recording

6. Iowa - Slipknot

To this day, there still aren’t that many records that can hold a candle to Slipknot’s debut record. Although the band may have been pretty green at the start, producer Ross Robinson whipped them into shape in the studio, making the band record over and over again to make sure they captured that sonic mayhem onto the final mix. There’s a lot of disgusting moments on the self titled, but Iowa is those moments carried out for an entire project.

Looking to amplify the more disturbing elements of their first record, Iowa is the exact opposite of the commercial follow up, going even heavier with the guitars and vocals, all of which were coming from a frightfully disturbing place. After spending so much time on the road, the band had started to not take care of themselves, leading to some songs that are disturbing because of just how real they can sound, like Sid Wilson setting everything up for mayhem on 515 and everyone joining in on the screamed gang vocals on The Heretic Anthem.

The behind the scenes stories are even worse than the music though, with Corey talking about Ross throwing potted plants at the band while recording to get them worked up and even performing the closing title track completely naked and self mutilating himself on the actual track. Slipknot’s music can always be described as a bit animalistic, but this is where they really started to tap into that primal side of themselves.
