10 Classic Albums That Artists Hated Recording
5. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
Having couples in a band is never going to be easy. Just ask the likes of Sonny and Cher and they’ll be happy to tell you just how hard it is keeping a band together when you’re broken up, trying not to step on one another’s toes should you end up arguing and letting your personal drama seep its way into the music. That’s just worrying about one couple, but Fleetwood Mac had to worry about 2 at the exact same time.
Don’t let the folksy pop on Rumours fool you…these guys were in absolute shambles when recording this record, with John and Christine McVie breaking up right in the middle of recording and Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham’s relationship being on the rocks as well. In between takes, the producers had talked about the constant drama that was woven into the songs, with every songwriter in the band putting all of their pent up anger into the songs, like Lindsey’s kiss off to Stevie on Go Your Own Way or Christine’s beautiful goodbye to her relationship with John on Songbird.
There were even a handful of times where that emotional bomb went off in the studio, with Lindsey getting too controlling over how his songs were supposed to sound or even getting into actual screaming matches with Stevie when recording the backing vocals for You Make Loving Fun. This should have been a disaster, but everyone started to really identify with that kind of honest writing, turning Rumours into one of the biggest albums of the ‘70s. The band may have been fracturing in half during the production, but they could always count on the musical chain to keep them together.
