10 Classic Albums That People Originally Hated

8. Women and Children First - Van Halen

It feels somewhat strange putting a David Lee Roth-era Van Halen record as something worthy of being hated by the rock mainstream. Ever since their breakup in the late '80s, the entire rock scene has seemed to have put somewhat of a golden halo around this era of the group as one of the greatest runs in rock history. However, sometimes the hatred can come more from something you didn't hear as opposed to what you did.

When Women and Children First was initially released on the world, you could practically hear a pin drop when it came to the mainstream. Since these songs weren't the most single-ready at the time, most people seem to remember the tour for this album more than the album itself. What you're missing out on though might be the single most metallic release of the group's entire career.

Despite being called a hair band for most of the '80s, this was where Van Halen really knuckled down, with songs that were as much indebted to punk and Black Sabbath as it was to the party rock that they lived and died on. Across every track, songs like Loss of Control and Romeo Delight take no prisoners, sounding like they could be played either in a stadium or inside a dirty nightclub in downtown LA. If you consider yourself a VH aficionado, you owe it to yourself to give this one just a little bit more consideration in terms of the all time greats.
