10 Classic Albums That People Originally Hated
7. 2112 - Rush
Ok...now it's just starting to get pushy. How in the hell is 2112, one of Rush's crowned jewels that has been heralded as a masterpiece in the prog rock genre, ever be considered something worthy of hatred? While this record is a virtual bombardment of musical perfection from cover to cover, most people forget that this was seen as career suicide back in the day.
Coming off of the prog rock epic Caress of Steel, these Canadian icons were under intense pressure from their label to come out with some more commercial material. Since the tour dates were drying up and the album sales were criminally low, Rush practically had their backs against the wall to come up with some more singles. Instead though, everyone hunkered down and vowed to make the record that they wanted to make, regardless of whether the label wanted it or not.
By the time the label received the finished album with a 20 minute epic piece to start, most were thinking that Rush would fade into obscurity and be dropped. What happened next proved to be the greatest way of sticking to your guns, as most prog rock fans managed to grasp the concept and started to spread the word about these rock legends from up North. Even though Fly By Night was the first real taste of success, this is when the prog greatness truly gets underway.
