4. Core - Stone Temple Pilots

A lot of rock fans tend to forget just how insular the grunge community was when it started. Long before the media really got ahold of it, this kind of disaffected rock music was almost solely indebted to the Pacific Northwest, with most wannabes left by the wayside. In fact, the community was so close that you could sometimes pass by acts that were actually pretty amazing.

On the surface though, it's not like the grunge community didn't have a point when it came to Core by Stone Temple Pilots. Across its runtime, it's clear that Scott Weiland is taking more than a few cues from Eddie Vedder's singing style, as well as the deliberately dirty licks from the DeLeo Brothers. Once you separate it from its time period though, this is a good slice of what would become known as alternative rock later down the line, toeing the line between the heaviness of grunge and the regular rock and roll of days gone by.

Though you could argue the boy-bandification of grunge happening on the power ballad Creep, there's not a single cynical bone in Weiland's body when he sings this or any other song for that matter. At the end of the day, it just comes down to the rockers' version of alternative, which is still pretty kickass once you give it a chance.
