10 Classic Albums With Glaring Errors
5. Vapor Trails - Rush
Vapor Trails is known as one of the greatest comebacks that Rush had made in their career. After drummer Neil Peart had suffered the devastating loss of both his daughter and wife within one year, many were concerned whether these prog giants would ever play again. Once they decided to return though, the songs were amazing...but the record was not.
It probably sounds like an oxymoron for an album like Vapor Trails to be a bad album with good songs, but the devil lies in the details behind this one. Like a lot of hard rock bands at the time, this album fell prey to the volume wars, in which people try to place tons of volume on the CD for maximum impact.
While that should work perfect for a rock setting, the result sounds more like the instruments are clipping the microphones rather than sounding larger than life.
For as good as a song like “One Little Victory” is, it’s a bit of a hurdle trying to overcome the headache you’re giving to yourself by listening to it. The band ended up releasing a remixed version of the album with better production, but for a while, Vapor Trails was looked at as a great album with a lot of missed opportunities.
