10 Classic Guitar Riffs That Were Created By Accident

9. Murder By Numbers - The Police

Given how much tension went on in the Police at the best of times, it's a miracle we even managed to get 5 albums out of them. No matter how much each member of this power trio cared about the end result, the meticulous writing from Sting seemed to be getting much too big for just one band to occupy. Hell, if you weren't careful, you might even find yourself writing one of your most complicated songs on a whim.

During the final recordings for Synchronicity, the B-side Murder By Numbers came together through Andy Summers goofing around in the studio. Ever a student of the jazzier sides of music, Summers began fiddling around with some complex chord structures when Sting found some demented lyrics that would go on top of everything. Quickly putting the gear back in the studio, Sting donned the stand up bass and cut Murder By Numbers in one take before wrapping the session.

You can really tell that they're just hearing it for the first time if you listen hard enough, considering that Stewart Copeland almost loses his place when the second verse comes in. It may have been as easy as ABC's in the studio, but the rest of us simpletons will probably need a healthy dose of music theory to get to this level.
