10 Classic Rock Albums That Were AHEAD OF THEIR TIME

9. Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys

The biggest hurdle that bands had to deal with back in the '60s was being taken seriously. As much as the British Invasion may have sold millions of records around the world, there were still some skeptics who thought that they couldn't match up to the sounds of people like Sinatra a few years prior. Once the Beatles decided to jump down the musical rabbit hole though, Brian Wilson wasn't too far behind.

After spending almost half a decade making letter perfect summer music, Wilson was determined to make something that could stand together as an album rather than just a collection of singles. Inspired by the Beatles' Rubber Soul, Pet Sounds is the sound of Brian Wilson entering his legendary phase as a songwriter, bringing in the Wrecking Crew as the backing band behind the band's lush harmonies.

Despite some members of the band having reservations with it, Pet Sounds became one of the most forward looking albums ever made, showing everyone that pop music could mean more than just a few hits. Whether it's songs like God Only Knows or Don't Talk, each track on here has that little hint of melodrama that makes all pop music today feel absolutely earth shattering. Other bands may have tried to equal hooks like this, but when you have competition in this album, you might want to pack it in now.
