10 Classic Rock Albums With Only One Bad Song

5. Mother's Lament - Cream

Most of the attributes that we take for granted nowadays in rock and roll are extensions of what Cream had done first. Before the likes of Sabbath or Zeppelin even came along, the sounds of this English trio planted the seeds of what heavy music could be, slowing things down and making everything a lot more heavy. Even though the subject matter could get a little weird in the '60s though, why did we have to have something like Mother's Lament closing out Disraeli Gears?

Across the rest of this album, Cream gave us visions that you didn't even know your mind's eye was capable of seeing, from the bluesy mayhem of Strange Brew to the guitar riff to end all riffs on Sunshine of Your Love. And then we have this song, which is a weird avant garde piece of music that features mostly the band members singing in unison about a mother who watches her child drown in the sink.

This doesn't just remove you from the album either. This is the equivalent of hearing a pop song and then switching straight to death metal today. You can say it was just because they needed to fill out the album, but any record label boss with common sense would talk them out of something like this. If there was ever a case to be made for musical whiplash, this is probably the first one to look at.
