10 Classic Rock Albums With Only One Bad Song
3. Goin Home - The Rolling Stones
Those precious few that are still trying to convince people that the Rolling Stones were a knockoff Beatles really need to get the stick out of their ass. Yes, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards certainly benefited from the songwriting lessons of the Fab Four, but they had enough talent to make classic songs on their own like Gimme Shelter and Paint It Black later down the line. To get there though, they had a lot of growing up to do in the early days.
Compared to the normal bluesy affairs of their first albums, Aftermath is the first record that feels like it's a more cohesive collection of songs by the Stones, with tracks like Mother's Little Helper and Lady Jane showing some more details in the production. In the case of Goin Home, it feels like the Stones were trying to run before they could walk.
What makes this track stand out is just the sheer length of the thing, standing at over 11 minutes of Jagger singing about going home to see his lady. It would be one thing to have a song like this, but the track doesn't really go anywhere, just peddling away on a handful of notes until it graciously fades away at the end. They probably were trying to make it sound like a journey by stretching it out, but if you don't have parts to fill those minutes, all we're left with is just a long dirge that we can't wait to end.
