10 Classic Rock Bands That Ripped Off Themselves
7. When - Megadeth
When you talk about bands ripping themselves off, there's always a bit of grey area when it comes to Megadeth. Ever since Dave Mustaine was booted from Metallica, he has been recycling the riffs that he wrote during his time with the band, while also seeing his old bandmates make songs out of them as well. Though Hangar 18 is the biggest comparison when looking at both bands, a better case should be made for When off of the World Needs a Hero.
By this point, we've gotten used to the more intricate clean guitar sounds on a Megadeth album, and yet there's something about this riff that feels all too familiar. When you break down what Dave's actually doing here, this is just the basis of one of the main licks in the Call of Ktulu from Ride the Lightning, which was based on some of the sketches that Mustaine was using before he left the band.
In this case though, you can't really call it plagiarism. After all, this was his idea in the first place, and this might have been just a subtle way for him to get some payback on the guys from all the bad blood that went down back in the day. Either way you slice it though, we did end up getting two kickass songs out of the deal. So which band wins here? Neither. The fans do.
