10 Classic Rock Bands That Ripped Off Themselves

6. Times of Trouble - Temple of the Dog

In the early grunge scene of Seattle, band members were being traded left and right across town. It wouldn't be all that strange to see a drummer in one band one week, only to be finding himself in a complete different one a couple of weeks later. When those swapping band members start to get famous though, you start to notice a little bit of overlap in the riffs.

As Mother Love Bone fell apart, Stone Gossard started shopping demos around of his music, which eventually found its way into Eddie Vedder's hands in San Diego. Creating a coherent story across three songs, Vedder took this spare guitar lick that Stone made and turned it into Footsteps, which became one of the most popular B-sides of the band's early years.

Around the same time that Eddie was finding his groove though, Chris Cornell offered Stone to join Temple of the Dog as a tribute to Andy Wood, and that same guitar lick crept back up again. For the most part, Times of Trouble and Footsteps are practically the exact same song, only with Cornell delivering his searing wail over top of it instead of the brooding sounds of Eddie. Although Temple of the Dog's record came out long before Ten was released, the magic of Pearl Jam was already starting to bubble up just a few miles south of Seattle.
