10 Classic Rock Bands That Ripped Off Themselves
5. Otherside - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Most of the Peppers' album Californication sounds like a healing process for everyone involved. After bringing John Frusciante back from the brink of drug hell and Anthony Kiedis also being on the road to recovery, a lot of the songs reflect those scars, with topics that delve into the seedier side of life in California. When you're writing about your scar collection though, you just have to make sure that you don't end up repeating yourself too much.
Of all of the ballads that were released on this record, Otherside feels like another version of what we had already seen before leading up to this record. Since the standout song from this era is the title track, putting this song right before it just makes it look weak, especially when you start to pay attention and realize that they share some of the exact same chords.
'But wait'...I can hear some of you saying. The messages of the songs are different though, since Californication is about Hollywood and Otherside is about Anthony's addiction. Point taken, except for the fact that Anthony already played that kind of schtick brilliantly almost a decade earlier when he wrote Under the Bridge. While Otherside is a great song, you can definitely see the stitches where they brought in different parts of other Chili Peppers songs to flesh it out.
