10 Classic Rock Bands That Went Disco
8. Blondie
It seems like Blondie is more known for their pop songs these days than for their actual roots. When you look at some of the biggest songs of the band's career, you get a lot of the bubblegum stuff like The Tide is High, which is nowhere near how they started off in the early days. No...Debby Harry was the Queen of Glamour, but she started off in a pretty decent punk band back in the day.
Before the term disco had reared its head, Blondie were known to be one of the staples of the New York punk scene, where they would casually be playing sets at CBGB's alongside the Ramones. While their music was still far away from anything too heavy, their snotty version of pop songs fit right in the mix, until the day that they decided to embrace the dance side of things.
When Harry had first written the basis for Heart of Glass, most of the band played it expecting their audience to hate it, sort of like a troll to the crowd in between songs. Once you play a song like that over and over again, you're bound to get a little better every time, and the original joke version of this song turned into one of the biggest hits that the band would ever have. Over time though, Heart of Glass existed beyond disco and become a classic '70s track, whether it was rock or not. As far away from punk as this seems, people can only dream of making a pop song this good.
