10 Classic Rock Songs That Mean Absolutely Nothing

9. This is a Call - Foo Fighters

Ever since picking up the pieces of Nirvana, Dave Grohl has transformed himself into one of the best rock songwriters in the business. In over 2 decades' time, Grohl has practically made a laundry list of hits, some of which might even be able to go toe to toe with his former bandmate Kurt Cobain. When your songwriting teacher was known for writing nonsense though, don't be surprised when you find yourself not connecting the dots right away.

Although there are some real emotional highpoints on the Foos' debut record, This is a Call is more focused on the sound rather than the lyrics at hand. Going from one line to the next, you have no idea just what the hell Dave is going on about, talking about coloring in magic markers to speaking about the beauty of balloons in another part of the verse. And somewhere along the line, these have to be connected to the chorus that's meant to be a call to action?

For all of us shaking our heads though, Dave was never one to dwell on the words that much in the early days, oftentimes just throwing stuff together and then trying to make sense of it a little later. This might still be one hell of a jam from the band's early days, but the meaning of this tune still exists solely in the mind of Mr. Grohl.
