10 Classic Rock Songs That Mean Absolutely Nothing
6. Loser - Beck
In the grand scheme of rock in the '90s, Beck has always been a bit of an odd man out. Though he came up at a time when the grunge scene was in full swing, this was just the art school dork that happened to fit right in with the ironic scene that was coming up. And on Loser, this man has come to spit some fire and confuse you, in that exact order.
While we have definitely gone through our fair share of weird songs to come out of the '90s, Loser still stands as one of the strangest, being dominated by just a single slide guitar loop and an unstoppable chorus. You do have a structure to the tune though, but good luck finding any type of cohesion in the rap verses. The chorus checks out alright, and then the verses come in with some of the most disjointed visuals of all time, as Mr. Hansen talks about being a monkey in the time of chimpanzees and telling us about a man who hung himself with a guitar string.
Granted, there is a sort of tongue in cheek humor about it as well, as he compares his brain to a piece of wax and getting crazy with the cheese wizz. If anything, the one line that sums it up for the whole song is the sample of a man going 'things are gonna change, I can feel it.' With the entire rock scene shifting almost overnight on MTV, that sample is a definite understatement.
