10 Classic Rock Songs That Mean Absolutely Nothing

7. Breed - Nirvana

There's always been the lingering myth that Kurt Cobain didn't really care about lyrics for the most part. Although he may have downplayed his lyrical prowess from time to time, there are actually some pretty decent messages on Nevermind, like the call to arms on Smells Like Teen Spirit or making fun of posers on In Bloom. Then you get further down the record and you start to see why that gibberish tag makes some sense.

That's not to downplay Breed though, being one of the most straight ahead punk sounding songs on the entire record. There's even the trademark grunge lyric starting us off by Kurt screaming 'I don't care' right in our faces. Then you get to the chorus where things start to fall apart, with Kurt trying to flirt with this girl and swapping the verbiage by saying that they could plant a house and build a tree together.

That was how Kurt always played it though. The goal was never to find something that would go on for an entire song. These was an example of having words that sound good together and forming a song that actually feels earnest about talking to this object of his affection. Hell, if you wanted to stretch, this is probably one of the closest thing to a silly love song that Kurt Cobain could have come up with at this point in his career.
