10 Classic Rock Songs That Mean Absolutely Nothing
3. Supersonic - Oasis
As grunge started to fade, Oasis were one of the few bands that made us feel like everything was going to be alright. While the sources that Noel Gallagher got his inspiration might be just a touch plagiaristic at times, you weren't going to mistake this Northern punk attitude for anything else coming out of the Britpop movement. Then again, when you're writing on the fly, don't be surprised when you don't have the most meaningful lyrics to go with it.
When working on Definitely Maybe, Supersonic wasn't even supposed to be a real contender for a single, as the band originally worked on Bring It On Down. After taking a break for dinner, Noel came up with Supersonic on the fly and ended up recording the whole thing that night, with some of the most off the wall lyrics ever. This is more of a case where the individual lyrics might have meaning but the whole doesn't, like going from Liam talking about sailing in his yellow submarine to knowing a girl called Elsa who's into Alka Seltzer.
There's always been the age old saying with lyrics about leaving out just the right amount of details so that the audience can fill in the gaps. In the case of Supersonic though, you're going to have to give at least a few details for us to understand you. Then again, Liam said it in the song: no one's going to tell us what he's on about.
