10 Classic Rock Songs That Use 3 Chords Or Less
9. Columbia - Oasis
There are still probably a few cynics in the rock world that think that everything Oasis did has been coaxing off of plagiarism. Since they have been known to wear their influences a little too much on their sleeves sometimes, people have had no problem calling them just derivative and nothing more. In between those Beatles worshipping sessions though, there is some genuine attitude on a song like Columbia.
Being a favorite of rhythm guitarist Bonehead throughout his time in the band, this entire song was originally meant to be a neverending loop that Liam Gallagher could walk onstage to every night. When they started thinking about it as an actual song, it never lost that loop, with the entire song being just 3 chords played in a row without really stopping. As much as that would get boring for 6 minutes on end, it's more about what the band does using those notes.
Using the entire second half of the song as an outro for their music, the psychedelic side of the band really starts to take over, with producer Owen Morris layering one guitar lick after another from Noel Gallagher until you're in a trance in your headphones. It may be a bit tedious for the 'get to the chorus' crowd, but this is the kind of atmospheric swagger that made the early years of Britpop so amazing.
