10 Classic Rock Songs That Use 3 Chords Or Less

4. Something in the Way - Nirvana

The entire road to create the song Something in the Way was a long journey for everyone in Nirvana. Before the track even had a shot at being on Nevermind, Kurt Cobain was playing the song on an old beat up 5 string guitar that barely had its tuners in place. All that work...just for two chords that go back and forth.

Compared to the rest of the tracks on Nevermind, Something in the Way might be the most lo fi as well, with Kurt's vocal and guitar part being recorded while he was sitting on a couch in the control room instead of the studio floor. As time went on though, it got even tougher, with Krist Novoselic and the eventual cellist having trouble trying to tune their instruments to Kurt's guitar, which was steadily going out of tune during the recording.

As unprofessional as some of the track sounds though, that's exactly what made it work. Even with all of its imperfections, there's a certain eeriness captured here that no other Nirvana track has. Of all the blistering tracks that would come on In Utero, Something in the Way only needs two chords to really capture that disturbing feeling. And if this scary mood is good enough to soundtrack the latest iteration of Gotham City, you're on another level of darkness.
